If you didn’t file a 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025, it’s official—you’ve lost your shot at the $1,400 stimulus check and any 2021 tax refunds. The IRS deadline has closed, and there’s no legal way to claim that money anymore. Millions, especially low-income Americans who weren’t required to file, didn’t realize filing was necessary to receive the full benefit. Missed credits, wage withholdings, and other refunds now belong to the U.S. Treasury. Going forward, remember: taxpayers have three years from the original filing deadline to claim refunds. It’s too late for 2021—but you might still be able to claim for 2022 or 2023.
