In 1829, the Capuchins left Pondicherry. The spiritual care of the Apostolic
Prefecture of
Notre
Dame des Anges was handed over to the Spiritans. The Apostolic Prefect had
jurisdiction over the French, Europeans, Eurasians, Topas and the Creoles in
Pondicherry,
Mahe and Yanam.
The Spiritual jurisdiction of Chandranagore was fully handed over to
the
Spiritans while Karaikal to the M.E.P.

On 1st September 1886, by the Publication of the Papal Bull, "Humanae Salutis Auctor', the Indian Ecclesiastical
Hierarchy was established and the Apostolic Prefecture of Notre Dame des Anges was suppressed and
became a Parish under the newly erected Archdiocese of Pondicherry. In 1887, the Spiritans left
Pondicherry handing over the Parish and the Collège Colonial to the M.E.P missionaries.
